What is bioluminescence?

Bioluminescence in Costa Rica is a fascinating natural phenomenon that occurs in some of its coastal areas and bodies of water, where tiny marine organisms, such as phytoplankton and certain types of jellyfish, emit light. This light results from chemical reactions within these organisms, a process known as bioluminescence.

When phytoplankton is agitated by the movement of water—whether from waves, boat wakes, or even swimmers—it produces a glowing blue light, creating an impressive visual spectacle. In Costa Rica, the most privileged areas to observe this phenomenon are the Bay of Paquera and Tambor. This magical nocturnal display draws many tourists and offers a unique experience in close contact with nature.
